Most water heaters cannot last for a lifetime. Once they have leaks, that is already a big problem. You can replace them with a new one. However, if you do not have money to buy a new one, you can do water heater leak repair for the mean time.
Not all water heaters can be repaired. Depending on the leak, you can repair or replace your heater. Here are some steps on how to do water heater leak repair.
1. Assessment.
Assess the leak if it can be repaired. Since most are lined with protective surface like glass, sometimes, it is not possible to replace a leak.
Examine the leak and determine where it is coming from. If it is not coming from the tank, that is good. That only means that it is coming from either the fittings and piping connected to the tank. In that case, the leak is repairable.
2. Checking.
Check the pressure valve. Sometimes, leaks can come from the pressure valve. When you examine the tank, you will see there a fitting which is somewhat odd. It is attached on the side of the tank. On top of it is a small handle which is used for manual operation. That odd-looking thing is the valve.
If it is leaking, it has to be replaced.
3. Work.
Turn off the gas or power first. Then, turn off also the water. Shut off the water that is coming in and out. You can do this by closing the valves that are in-lines. You can see these valves beside or above the heater.
Look for the sillcock valve and attach a hose to it. That valve is located at the bottom of the tank. Let the water go out from the tank. Let go also of the pressure from the sillcock by opening it. Empty the tank.
Afterwards, detach the piping.
4. Fixing.
You are now ready to fix the leaks. Depending on the leak, you can tighten or reseal fittings and piping. Use necessary tools like pipe wrench so that you can tighten them well.
If you are done, assemble the parts to the original form.
5. Test.
Close the sillcock. Open the valve that let go of hot water out, then slowly open the valve that let cold water goes in. If you see no leak, then you had successfully repair you water heater.
When you do water heater leak repair, you can save money. You can avoid spending money buying another heater. Furthermore, you can retain your beloved appliance.
