Electric Water Heater Review

By Steve Mathews

Electric water heaters were probably the first to be invented and used. As a system it is very primitive, and yet there has been very little advancement in its design since its inception. An electric water heater is nothing but a huge tank of water that has a coil that is placed inside. This coil is connected to your current supply so that when you turn it on, the coil gets heated and thus heats the water.

Obviously the heater needs to be insulated, and for two reasons. One is that when electricity is passed through the coil it also passes through the water, which means that unless the outside of the tank is insulated anyone who touches it will get a shock. The second is common sense, if you don’t insulate it the heat will dissipate quickly which means that the heater has to be on longer. Result; higher power bills.

One advancement in this design came about in the tankless heating system where there is no storage tank. The water gets heated as it passes through the heater. This of course requires much more electricity than normal, but since it is only for a short duration you can get up to a 15% savings on your heating bills with this system.

Many people however do not install them to heat water for their entire house, instead preferring to use them at the point of final use, like their shower, or maybe their kitchen etc. Some of these even have an ionize system that ionizes the water so that it becomes potable. These are the under sink ones and are very effective at both giving you hot water as well as potable water.

Nowadays the older storage water heaters are not preferred very much because the government gives tax concessions if you buy the gas powered tankless water heating systems. Considering that this rebate can amount to as much as 30% of the cost and installation, you will be getting them at around the same price as a storage one, but with a lot of power savings thrown in.

The smaller tankless water heaters make a good choice in certain places where you cannot install the gas powered ones like for your sink etc and these are actually gaining acceptance quickly nowadays because of that. They are also not too expensive, and although they do not give you too much savings or tax concessions, they work very well in tandem with a larger gas powered water heater for the entire house.
